ABSTRACT
The article presents an interview with Mary Ann Davidson, Oracle Corp.'s Chief Security Officer, about the types of security threats of most concern to her database customers. Davidson said that the company will make its new quarterly update process as painless as possible. The company picked the dates based on trying to optimize around most people's calendars, such as avoiding blackout periods. If it's applicable and there are multiple security issues that affect different products, all those patches for each product family all come out at the same time. That way, customers don't have to take their system down this month for the database, and next month for the Application Server. Customers say they'll just have a meltdown to do this once a month, so once a quarter seemed something they could live with. In response to a question regarding criticism from the security research community that Oracle has lagged in rolling out patches fast enough, Davidson said that the company always tries to fix these as quickly as possible.
