ABSTRACT
The article presents an update on the steel industry in the U.S. as of April 2005 and presents an outlook for the industry until 2009. In 2004, steel prices decreased with sheets and long products exhibiting the most decline. Prices of plate and stainless remain firm, however. Likewise, scrap prices declined in the second quarter of 2004 and steel supply was both tight in the U.S. and globally. Though U.S. steel demand is strong, it does not match the expected strength for which many mills had planned and produced.
