ABSTRACT
This article presents an overview of the metal industry of the U.S. Prices have exploded, with spot prices already up about 70% since August 2003, and likely to reach $540-580 per ton by April, double the August low. The increases are primarily driven by input costs, as scrap and ore availability has been disrupted. Demand for hot-rolled sheet is improving, and should do well if steel prices and supply do not choke off output. Manufacturing is improving, including business investment in machinery and other durable goods.
