ABSTRACT
The article presents an overview of the U.S. metal industry. Its talks about the bottom line of the steel industry, the demand and supply scenario and price variations in the steel trade. Continued low prices and tepid demand are splashing red ink across steel company balance sheets. Market forecast by Global Insight Inc. calls for gradually improving prices in the second half of 2003, but excess global production may undercut the rally. So, if production is not cut dramatically in nations that have been very strong this year, there will be a huge surplus of steel within months.
