U.S. Industry Quarterly Review: Paper & Packaging;2002 4th Quarter, p49
Industry Profile
Industry Overview
The article presents information on the paper and packaging industry in the U.S. Manufacturers of paper and products still view 2002 as a year of recovery, after over two years of weak demand and falling prices. Market conditions improved during the summer, and despite a down tick toward year-end for both demand and prices, the stage is set for most players to start improving profits in 2003. Before producers' bottom lines start to improve significantly, however, ongoing issues, such as foreign competition and overcapacity, must still be addressed. In 2001, more than 2.5 million tons of paper and paperboard capacity was taken out of production. As a result, over 21,000 jobs were lost.
