The article presents statistics indicating the performance history and expected performance of the U.S. internal combustion engine industry. The gross operating profit (GOP) for the third quarter of 2001 was $ 3.3 billion. GOP for the third quarter of 2002 is expected to be $3.2 billion. GOP for the first quarter of 2003 is expected to be $3.5 billion. Input cost of materials and services in the third quarter of 2002 is expected to be at $8.4 billion and $3.3 billion for labor.
