ABSTRACT
An essay is presented which examines various arguments for and against the use of philanthropic foundations in modern democracies. Particular focus is given to tensions between cultural ideals concerning foundations and the realities of their achievements. According to the authors, foundations receive less feedback than other organizations on their need, performance, and achievements because they are not accountable to correcting audiences or controlling stakeholders.
