ABSTRACT
An essay is presented on the story and figure of Faust as one of the most known archetypes of the literary imagination since the Renaissance. It highlights the figure of Faust which had been scandalous model of human depravity in his devotion to sensuous pleasures and his intellectual ambition. It explores the short story "Young Goodman Brown" where novelist and short story writer Nathaniel Hawthorne transformed the Faustian material into an aesthetic response to the mentalities of his society.
