An essay is presented on the relationship between oil consumption and economic growth in the U.S. between 1965 and 1980. It attempts to assess the significance of energy reform policies of the U.S. government in the 1970s and posits why U.S. energy policy was relatively stalled as of 2012. The article examines U.S. policy making in the 1970s, dependence on foreign oil, and the rise of the environmental movement in the U.S. and its impact on policy. The author argues that the U.S. utilized its military in the Middle East in order to secure inexpensive oil from the region.
