ABSTRACT
This article presents an explication of "Eighth Air Force" by Randall Jarrell. Written during World War II, the poem judges the men who caused so much death on their bombing missions. The narrator, observing a group of pilots resting before a mission, wrestles with the question of assigning moral blame to each man for his part in the war, but ultimately concludes that their situation frees them from any moral judgment or condemnation
