An essay on the origin of the annual show called Hock Tuesday Play performed in Coventry, England, and its connection to English folk festival known as Hocktide is presented. It explores the relationship between Hocktide and the Danish occupation of England. The author describes the nature of Hocktide and early theories concerning its genesis. She mentions the practice of hocking, the most common festive activity which involved detaining neighbors or passers by and releasing them upon payment.
