An essay is presented on the interpretations of the miniature painting by Jean Fouquet, which illustrates the Martyrdom of Saint Appolonia usually dated between 1452 and 1460 relative to aspects of medieval theatre. It explores arguments over the interpretations of painting as a real evidence of the medieval theatrical space where most medieval drama was performed. The author says that the painting does not depict that all medieval religious plays were necessarily performed on the same stage.
