ABSTRACT
An essay is presented regarding cartographer David Thompson who became blind in February 1848 but was treated by physician Henry Howard with hydrocyanic acid and veratria solution, and regained vision three weeks after the treatment. Ophthalmologist John Speakman believes that his right eye suffered from an injury causing the formation of cataract while his left eye suffered from acute corneal hydrops. However, Speakman argues that the simultaneous treatment of the injuries is coincidence.
