ABSTRACT
An essay is presented which discusses the opposition of theologian J. Gresham Machen to scientific naturalism, modernism and pragmatism and his defense of metaphysical and moral concepts. The author notes that although Machen decried the exclusion of morals and metaphysics from epistemology during the 1920s and 1930s, he supported the separation of church and state. Machen influenced the views of other theologians such as Carl F.H. Henry and Frank Schaeffer.
