ABSTRACT
The article presents an essay that narrates the author's experience living in various places in the U.S. The author notes that she prefers towns with a little grit such as Tacoma, Washington, as opposed to more hip places like Seattle, Washington or Portland, Oregon. She considers Astoria, Oregon as her all-time favorite place to live. When she was there, much of the downtown was empty, but its inhabitants believed that the town would make a comeback someday.
