The author discusses developments in the regeneration of lost periodontal support through tissue engineering. Prior to osseointegration, the focus was on guided bone regeneration, periodontal bone grafting and splinting of teeth for edentulism. One study indicated that early reattachment is more effective than conventional therapy, emphasizing the need for reappraisal of when and when not to remove a tooth instead of osseointegration.
