ABSTRACT

The author comments on a research study which reported the efficacy of pneumatic dilation and laparoscopic Heller's myotomy for treating achalasia. According to the author, the factors that should be considered by clinicians and patients in deciding between the two procedures are the protocol for pneumatic dilation, esophageal perforations that complicate pneumatic dilation, the performance of the procedures by gastroenterologists and surgeons, and their beneficial effects. He thinks that the decision lies on patient preferences and local expertise.
