ABSTRACT
The author reflects on a Christmas speech given by Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain concerning the positive aspects of engaging in sports on public land, such as village greens. He also describes the importance of King James I of England to the development of a sporting culture in opposition to Puritan belief with his publication of "Book of Sports." The author then goes on to trace the history of sport in England beyond the reign of King James.
