ABSTRACT
The authors look at the challenges in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing for health providers and patients. The need to balance appropriate HIV pretest counseling and other competing health concerns, lack of training and the anxiety of disclosing diagnostic results to patients discourage providers in providing HIV test. Patients also experience anxiety with the prospect of having an HIV test, they add. They suggest that providers avoid being judgmental, establish rapport with patients and use noninvasive approach for needle-phobic patients.
