The author comments on a study that examined the case of a 12-year-old boy who was successfully revived by prolonged resuscitation after a cardiac arrest following completion of an elective circumcision, caused by hyperkalaemia secondary to anaesthesia-induced rhabdomyolysis. A genetic investigation revealed that the child had Becker's muscular dystrophy. The case is said to highlight the importance of resuscitation after perioperative hyperkalaemic cardiac arrest in children until the plasma potassium concentration has been normalized.
