ABSTRACT
The author comments on the decision of the state Supreme Court to declare the sanctity of same-sex marriage in California. The author thinks that having marriage as a viable option for gays creates a hierarchy of loving relationships. In this hierarchy, marriage is supposed to be the pinnacle of all relationships, and just below it are civil unions, then domestic partnerships, which are said to be above dating monogamously. The author believes that emphasis on marriage equality belittles the relevance of other forms of relationships in the gay community.
