Accepting the Challenge: Using the Web to Help Newspapers Survive

December 2008
Nieman Reports;Winter2008, Vol. 62 Issue 4, p21
The author offers opinions on how newspapers can use their Web sites to evolve to meet the financial challenges of the 2000s. The Internet is seen as allowing newspapers to become more versatile in how they provide information, using audio and video which were formerly the exclusive domain of broadcast journalism. In terms of finance, the continuing expansion of means of digital communication is said to give newspapers the chance to present information and advertising from a variety of platforms. The creation of application software bearing the newspaper brand for smartphones is cited as an example of how this could be done.
