The article presents the authors' views regarding the case of a woman who was hospitalized for worsening scleroderma and died due to acute pulmonary embolism (PE), as she was not receiving an intervention to prevent deep venous thrombosis (DVT). They stress that every year more than 6 people in every 1000 develop DVT, and 1 die from PE. The authors also offer suggestions for clinicians for adopting workable hospital-wide DVT prophylaxis strategies.
