ABSTRACT
The author discusses the history of warfare and the reasons given to justify war. He says that throughout history many nations have fought to protect their nation, their religion, or their leader. Eventually, these concepts became less important to people. After the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the U.S., most U.S. soldiers who went to war did so to defend their country, even though the mission would be better described as a police effort to catch criminals.
