The authors reflect on a study on catheter-based closure as the first-line treatment strategy for secundum atrial septal defects. They tackle the benefits of transcatheter closure of secundum atrial septal defects. They examine a potential benefit of catheter closure over surgery in arrhythmia. They conclude that there are potential benefits in closing secundum atrial septal defects, like improvements in cardiac function as assessed by echocardiography.

ABSTRACT: Right aortic arch (RAA) associated with isolated atrial septal defect (ASD) is very rare. We report successful closure of ASD associated with RAA using a 26-mm atrial septal occluder in a 30-year-old male patient. The impingement of right descending aorta in RAA caused malposition of...

Background. To evaluate the long-term effectiveness and safety of a new Double BioDisk (DBD) device for closure of atrial septal defect (ASD). Materials and methods. ASD was created with transeptal needle (TS) followed by balloon dilatation in 12 sheep weighing 40.1 to 64 kg (mean 55.2 ±...

Objective: Transcatheter closure of secundum atrial septal defect (ASD) with Amplatzer device is an alternative procedure to surgical repair, with some limitations. The aim of this study was to assess the initial and mid-term results of the treatment of ASD with Amplatzer septal occluder in...

Intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) is an excellent ultrasound modality that can be used to guide atrial septal defect (ASD) closure. An 18-year-old male with Lutembacher's syndrome underwent balloon mitral valvotomy (BMV) and device closure of the atrial septal defect (ASD). BMV necessitated technical modification of taking the Inoue balloon over the wire (OTW) into the left ventricle (LV). The procedure was complicated by...

The atrial septal defect (ASD) is one of the most widespread congenital heart diseases (CHD). Purpose: For the successful completion of transcatheter closure of atrial septal defects with the Amplatzer septal occluder, shape of the defects should be considered prior to selecting the device. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the results of a transcatheter closure of oval shaped...
