The article discusses the highlights of the 14th Conference on Solid State Analysis which was held at the Vienna University of Technology from July 16-18, 2007 in Vienna, Australia. The conference focused on the exchange of information between analysts, materials, scientists, solid-state physicists and technologists. The main topics of the conference included elemental and compound analysis, micro and nanoanalysis, surface and interface analysis, trace analysis, structural analysis and chemical reactions in solid.

We have performed a comparative transmission electron microscopy study of solid-state interdiffusion reactions in multilayered Ni/Zr and Ni/Ti thin films. The Ni-Zr reaction product was amorphous while the Ni-Ti reaction product was a simple intermetallic compound. Because thermodynamic and...

Professor Vladimir V. Boldyrev has made numerous important contributions to a wide range of chemical topics, not only limited to studies of the decompositions of solids. Of particular value has been his emphasis on exploring, in detail, the chemical steps participating in the thermal reactions...

Antimony-containing mesoporous SBA-15 with different Si/Sb ratio has been synthesized using a post-treatment procedure with an aqueous solution of SbCl3 and characterized by elemental analysis, XRD method, N2 adsorption measurements (BET and BJH theory) and FTIR spectroscopy. The benzylation of...

Considering the unphysical result obtained in the calculation of the free-energy cost for twisting the boundary conditions in a spin glass, we trace it to the negative multiplicities associated with the Parisi replica-symmetry breaking (RSB). We point out that a distinct RSB, that keeps positive...

Exchange bias is commonly manifested as the hysteresis-loop shift observed when a ferromagnet is in contact with an antiferromagnet. Here, we report observations of exchange bias with unusual features of a ferromagnet in contact with a spin glass, demonstrating that this is a phenomenon of...

CoSn3 phase is formed in Sn/Co couples reacted at 200 °C. The reaction phase shows a unique cruciform pattern that is observed for the first time in the solid/solid reaction. The reaction phase layers are thick and uniform along the edges of the Co substrate, and there are no reaction phases...

Low-temperature phase BiTaO4 (α-BiTaO4) was successfully synthesized by the flux method using Bi2O3-B2O3 as the flux. According to previous reports, α-BiTaO4 has been mostly synthesized via a solid state reaction, which requires heating at 900?C for more than 48 h. In this study,...
