ABSTRACT
The author responds to comments made by marketing consultant Steve Lutz of the Perishables Group consulting firm regarding marketing in the fruit industry. It is reported that Lutz has highlighted the fact that fruit is often an impulse buy and suggested that the marketing of fruit products should focus on attracting consumers from inside the supermarket. The author argues that marketing efforts should also aim to create consumer interest in fruit varieties before they reach the grocery store.
