ABSTRACT
The author reflects on the impact of the troubled economic condition of the U.S. steel industry. The author notes that in 2007, several factors showed a slack performance of the nation's economy, including a 5% rise in the unemployment rate, and a rise in oil prices which topped $100 a barrel, reflecting an increase of nearly 75% compared to 2006. He points out that this trend has led some economists to predict a more-than-50% risk of recession in 2008.
