ABSTRACT
The author comments on the decision of U.S. President George W. Bush to urge Congress to reauthorize the No Child Left Behind Act. The author asks Congress to end federal goals for student progress and return control of state standards and accountability policies to the state level. The author argues that any attempt to erect national standards and assessments only will serve to aggravate further the growing gap between the U.S. people and their public schools. The author calls for the restoration of state and local control of education.
