ABSTRACT
The author comments on new product development in the grocery industry. Nielsen reports new product activity in all categories excepting general merchandise, in U.S. grocery/drug/mass channels, excluding Wal-Mart. Most of the top new items are line extensions of existing brands, either new sizes or flavors. According to the author, among the top 100 new items, 96 items are from existing brands, only three items are from entirely new brands, and one item is a sub-brand extension.
