ABSTRACT
This editorial comments on a study in this issue about the psychological toll of repeated deployments to war zones. The study found that soldiers who were deployed for more than 12 months out of 36 were more likely to have mental health problems. The study also found that post-traumatic stress disorder was more likely in soldiers when there was a mismatch between the expected and the actual length of deployment. It is the "toxic" nature of deployment that causes trauma.
