The author reflects on the reactions of several fire departments regarding innovations. According to him, change is scary to any fire service, with its militaristic hierarchy, since great ideas disrupts the status quo. Furthermore, he stresses that in any organization where new ideas are discouraged, better solutions are not incorporated.
