ABSTRACT
The Article 174 of the Amsterdam Treaty of the European Union is discussed. It states that community policy on the environment shall be based on the precautionary principle. The precautionary principle gained political profile in the 1980s and 1990s and has attracted the attention of many involved in matters of environmental protection.
