The article assesses the performance of the petrochemical industry according to delegates at the 40th annual meeting of the European Petrochemical Association in Monte Carlo from September 23 to 27, 2006. Some fear that increases in Middle Eastern capacity could coincide with a slowdown in global economies. Much depends on whether or not the Iranians are able to bring crackers 9 to 12 onstream as planned in 2007 and 2008. Project delays are still largely blamed on a lack of manpower in the Middle East and the increasing costs of building materials such as steel.
