Hero of the Un-Soviet Union

Forbes, Steve
September 2006
Forbes Asia;9/18/2006, Vol. 2 Issue 15, p16
The article discusses the role of lawyer Leonard Marks in the survival of Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty (RFE/RL). RFE/RL were under sustained assault in 1985. Liberals wanted to shut them down for they stand in the way of better relations with the Soviet Union. Other charges were leveled against the radios' broadcasts, ranging from inciting rebellion to anti-Semitism to inaccurate reporting. The law firm Cohn & Marks was legal counsel for RFE/RL. Marks' advice enabled the radios to beat back the attacks and put superb teams in place in Washington and at the radios' headquarters in Munich, Germany.
