ABSTRACT
The article stresses the ability of the automation industry to confuse its users. According to the author, field device tools do not offer distinct advantages over electronic device description language. In fact neither of the two is developed enough to make any definite judgment. Users must remember that no matter how an interface suits one valve, it does not follow that it will work on other valves. As soon as devices change, the link cease to function and the variable has to remap. This presents an opportunity for vendors, with leadership in both control systems and field devices, to have single-source advantage.
