The Umbrella Without Stays

November 1953
New Republic;11/9/53, Vol. 129 Issue 15, p7
The article presents the comments on the author on the leadership skills of U.S. President Dwight David Eisenhower and compares him with some former Presidents who were great party leaders as well as strong national leaders. It is opined that of the twin roles of national and party leader, Eisenhower is more suited to the first and yet the role so far has proved beyond him. His lack of mental vigor prevents him from carrying out the role. The role of party leader is still more alien to the President, so alien that when he shifts from a discussion of non-political to political issues, he looks more nervous and tense.
