ABSTRACT
The author reflects on the role played by volunteers in the success of the Journal of Financial Planning. It has won the 2003 APEX Award of Excellence sponsored by Communications Concepts. We take pride in this journal. We like to think we have a good handle on gathering content that suits our readership and that we know how to do our jobs. But the staff at the Journal of Financial Planning could not produce a professional, award-winning publication without the help of many volunteers who selflessly dedicate their time and expertise: our columnists, and the members of the advisory and editorial review boards. While we provide some writing guidelines, occasional feedback on a topic, and add or remove a comma here and there, it is these columnists' thoughts and unique styles that carry the Strategies & Trends section. They each write from experience. Their insights are compelling--whether creative, practical, controversial or innovative--and they write with a passion for their topic and interest in those who read their words. We meet quarterly by conference call to share updates on activities of the Financial Planning Association and the journal, and discusses projects and current trends: but our advisory board members willingly respond throughout the year to e-mails and phone calls from staff when we need their guidance and perspective.
