ABSTRACT
This article overviews political, economic and business environment of Laos as of June 2003. Democracy may be on the agenda if the government of Laos moves forward with proposals to amend the constitution to allow local elections.Candidates will however need approval from the ruling Communist Party. The outlook for the economy remains fairly upbeat. Real GDP growth is expected to accelerate slightly to 6.0% in 2003, from an estimated 5.8% in 2002.The flu-like virus known as SARS that has affected several countries in Asia, may well hit Laos' tourism industry despite the fact that the country is not known to have any cases of the illness.
