ABSTRACT
This article overviews political, economic and business environment of Vietnam as of June 2003. Vietnam's one-party state is expected to remain stable in the coming years. A high-profile action corruption, which began in late February with the start of the trial of Mafia boss Nam Cam and 154 co-defendants, poses few threats to stability.A landmark trade agreement with the U.S., signed in December 2001, will support Vietnam's exports of textiles and garments. Progress on long-stalled structural reforms is key to strengthening Vietnam's poor business environment. Reform of thousands of state-run enterprises and the nation's infrastructure must be given top priority, particularly if fierce competition for foreign investment from China is to be beatenoff.
