ABSTRACT
This article overviews political, economic and business environment of Vietnam as of May 2003. Vietnam's one-party state should remain stable in the coming years.A high-profile clampdown on corruption, which began in late February 2003 with the start of the trial of Mafia boss Nam Cam and 154 co-defendants, poses few threats to stability. Vietnam's economy expanded by a five-year high of 7.0% in 2002 compared with 6.8% a year earlier, according to official estimates.A landmark trade agreement with the U.S., signed in December 2001, will support Vietnam's exports of textiles and garments. Progress on long-stalled structural reforms is key to strengthening Vietnam's shoddy business environment. Reform of thousands of state-run enterprises and the nation's infrastructure must be given top priority, particularly if fierce competition for foreign investment from China is to be beaten off.
