ABSTRACT
The article discusses political and economic issues in Latvia. In September 2007, Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis suspended the head of the anti-corruption bureau on grounds of alleged financial violations. According to preliminary data from the Bank of Latvia, the current account deficit amounted to 23.5 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in the second quarter of 2007. The country's central bank has called on the government to enhance export competitiveness and tackle labor market problems.
