Country Report

Valdis Zatlers, a surgeon and hospital chief, has been voted to replace Vaira Vike-Freiberga as president on May 31, 2007. The Bank of Latvia increased interest rate hikes to 6.0 percent in May, to support disinflationary measures. The country's long-term foreign currency rating of A- has been downgraded to BBB+ by credit rating agency Standard and Poor's.
