ABSTRACT
The article presents information on the history of Lesotho. The country gained independence from Great Britain on October 4, 1966. The Basotho National Party ruled by decree until January 1986 when a military coup forced them out of office. The Military Council headed by Major General Metsing Lekhanya granted executive powers to King Moshoeshoe II. The King was forced into exile and his son was installed as King Letsie III.
