The article reports that Philippine lawmakers has called for a key defence treaty with the U.S. to be renegotiated to address the alleged rape of a Filipino woman by four U.S. marines. In response to this request, Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago, the chairman of the powerful foreign relations committee of the upper house, released a statement on January 19, 2006 that the joint congressional panel had agreed to abolish the Visiting Forces Agreement.
