ABSTRACT
The article presents an outlook for South East Asia. It is expected that the economic growth of this region will slow down, after expanding by an impressive 6.3 per cent in 2004. The main factor affecting regional expansion is the sustained high oil price. As most countries in the region are net oil importers, and subsidize oil to protect consumers, the rising prices are affecting both countries' trade and fiscal balances. Inflationary pressures may necessitate a rise in rates, which could curb growth prospects further.
