ABSTRACT
The article presents political and economic news related to Latvia. A split has emerged in the four-party governing coalition over Latvia's participation in the international operation in Iraq. The government in late August 2005 secured parliamentary approval for extra budgetary spending in the region of 1.6% of gross domestic product in the final months of 2005. According to an international rating agency, eurozone membership would play to Latvia's public sector strengths, while its large current account deficit and external debt would become less of a credit constraint.
