ABSTRACT
The article presents political and economic news related to Slovakia. The sacking of Slovakian Economy Minister Pavol Rusko due to questions over his personal finances has led him and several of his New Civic Alliance deputies to withdraw their backing from the ruling coalition. In the run-up to 2006 parliamentary election, the opposition Smer party has mooted plans to reintroduce a dividends tax cancelled by the present government and increase taxation on disproportionately high corporate profits, in order to finance support to Slovakia's poor.
