ABSTRACT
The article reports on political and economic conditions in Lithuania. The coalition's political council has decided to scrap its previous plan to introduce a tax on corporate turnover in favor of hiking the current tax rate on corporate profits by four percentage points in 2006 and a further three percentage points in 2007. Confidence surveys reveal that sentiment in the service and retail sectors both improved strongly in May 2005, although consumer confidence declined slightly. President Valdas Adamkus has hinted that two top politicians should resign their posts for undermining public confidence in the political system.
