ABSTRACT

The article presents information on Afghanistan. The total land area under the nation is 647,500 sq. km. and has Kabul as its capital. It gained independence in August 19, 1919. and has a Islamic Republic type of government. Afghanistan, often called the crossroads of Central Asia, has had a turbulent history. During the 19th century, collision between the expanding British Empire in the subcontinent and czarist Russia significantly influenced Afghanistan in what was termed "The Great Game." In December 1978, Moscow signed a new bilateral treaty of friendship and cooperation with Afghanistan, and the Soviet military assistance program increased significantly.
